What’s Happening at Milton?

Campus Spotlight: Seminar Day

The Keyes Seminar Day, a lively day of speaking engagements for Upper School students, has been one of Milton’s most important traditions since 1977. It is named in honor of its founder, former faculty member Peter Keyes, a legendary promoter of student interest in political process as well as public and governmental affairs and service. In the Milton spirit of developing students’ confidence and competence to live by our motto, “Dare to be true,” Seminar Day brings to campus people who have made compelling choices. Luminaries in the fields of science, public policy, technology, media, and beyond shared insights and ideas from their lives and careers, including biotech pioneer, entrepreneur, and educator Dr. Robert Langer, whose keynote address was made possible thanks to the donors to the Sarah Bowles ’56 Speaker Fund.

Stang Story: Reintroducing Stang Stories

In 2020, Teddy Ellis ’22 started Stang Stories, a student-produced podcast seeking to explore and share the life stories of esteemed Milton alumni with the broader Milton community. This year, as her senior project, Diane Asiedu ’24 revived the podcast and handed it over to a team of underclassmen she trained to keep it going. The first in Diane’s series of eight alumni podcast interviews was with Head of School Alixe Callen ’88. Listen now on the Stang Stories website, or find the series on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

Campus Spotlight: Senior Projects

Each May, seniors go “on project,” taking a deep dive into a topic they’re passionate about and sharing their success at the culmination of their work. This year’s seniors chose an impressive array of creative and innovative projects, including the renovation of a school bus into an R.V. for a cross-country road trip; the study of Brutalism and creation of a live model of the Nesto gallery; internships at local schools, businesses, and theatres; and the hosting of a Transgender Excellence Expo, to name just a few. Senior projects are a great opportunity for students to bridge their academic pursuits with real-world experiences, and the Class of 2024 did just that. Thank you to all of the alumni who worked with seniors on their projects. Pictured are Diane Asiedu ’24, Dianne Cao ’24, and Serhii Malevych ’24 with members of the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. For their senior projects, the three made valuable contributions to the office with their unique projects and talents while learning about Milton’s fundraising and engagement work.

Winter Dance Concert

The Milton Academy Performing Arts department recently held its annual Winter Dance Concert featuring student dancers and choreographers in an impressive display of talent and technology integration. The event also included guest appearances by Milton alumni, who performed to a song choreographed by Jidenna ’03. Missed the show? Watch the full performance.

Breaking Records, Not Hearts

Haley Hunt ’17, a TODAY Show intern, helped produce a record-breaking valentine segment for Hoda & Jenna. The piece broke a record for most vow renewal ceremonies performed online simultaneously. In support of this project, Haley researched participants from across the country and helped design graphics for the segment. “This project exposed me to all stages of producing a segment, from the planning to taping. The TODAY team has been so supportive, and has further inspired me to pursue a career in broadcast journalism.” Learn about the segment.

Brave Maeve Helps Children Cope

Congratulations to Milton alumni Katie Leeson ’93, Nick Hausman ’95, and Katie’s mother, Roxy Leeson, who recently released a children’s book titled, “Brave Maeve: A Story to Help Young Children and Grown-Ups Navigate COVID-19.” The book focuses on Katie’s daughter, Maeve, and how she navigates life and processes emotions during the pandemic. “We hope it’s a helpful conversation starter with kids, grandkids and special young friends,” stated Katie. The book was was included in “This Week’s Picks for Boston Families” by the Boston Globe.

Honoring Mr. Bisbee

We are sad to share that longtime Milton faculty member Ethan Wyatt Bisbee passed away recently. Mr. Bisbee dedicated his life to teaching and had a passion for learning. During his time at Milton, Mr. Bisbee taught history and economics from 1953 to 1993. He also served as chair of the history department. Mr. Bisbee was a constant presence in students’ lives well beyond his interactions in the classrooms. He often would find other ways to assist and encourage students he did not have the pleasure of teaching. Mr. Bisbee’s dedication to not only his job, but to his students, is something generations of Milton graduates will never forget. He will be remembered fondly for his contributions to the Milton community. Learn more about his life.

Two Grads “Grow Up”

Congratulations to Tristan Zeman ’13 and Jonnie Lawson ’15 for establishing their own farming business called Interius Farms. Tristan and Jonnie met at Wolcott House at Milton Academy, where they played football and baseball together. The two graduated from McGill University with management degrees. With a keen interest in sustainability, they created a sustainable farming business to benefit the Montreal community, especially during the winter months. Using a process known as vertical farming, Zeman and Lawson will bring fresh, local produce options to their community and eventually to consumers across Canada. Read more about their work.
