What’s Happening at Milton?

Campus Spotlight: Seminar Day

The Keyes Seminar Day, a lively day of speaking engagements for Upper School students, has been one of Milton’s most important traditions since 1977. It is named in honor of its founder, former faculty member Peter Keyes, a legendary promoter of student interest in political process as well as public and governmental affairs and service. In the Milton spirit of developing students’ confidence and competence to live by our motto, “Dare to be true,” Seminar Day brings to campus people who have made compelling choices. Luminaries in the fields of science, public policy, technology, media, and beyond shared insights and ideas from their lives and careers, including biotech pioneer, entrepreneur, and educator Dr. Robert Langer, whose keynote address was made possible thanks to the donors to the Sarah Bowles ’56 Speaker Fund.

Stang Story: Reintroducing Stang Stories

In 2020, Teddy Ellis ’22 started Stang Stories, a student-produced podcast seeking to explore and share the life stories of esteemed Milton alumni with the broader Milton community. This year, as her senior project, Diane Asiedu ’24 revived the podcast and handed it over to a team of underclassmen she trained to keep it going. The first in Diane’s series of eight alumni podcast interviews was with Head of School Alixe Callen ’88. Listen now on the Stang Stories website, or find the series on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

Campus Spotlight: Senior Projects

Each May, seniors go “on project,” taking a deep dive into a topic they’re passionate about and sharing their success at the culmination of their work. This year’s seniors chose an impressive array of creative and innovative projects, including the renovation of a school bus into an R.V. for a cross-country road trip; the study of Brutalism and creation of a live model of the Nesto gallery; internships at local schools, businesses, and theatres; and the hosting of a Transgender Excellence Expo, to name just a few. Senior projects are a great opportunity for students to bridge their academic pursuits with real-world experiences, and the Class of 2024 did just that. Thank you to all of the alumni who worked with seniors on their projects. Pictured are Diane Asiedu ’24, Dianne Cao ’24, and Serhii Malevych ’24 with members of the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. For their senior projects, the three made valuable contributions to the office with their unique projects and talents while learning about Milton’s fundraising and engagement work.

Sending our Support to Jake Thibeault

Our thoughts are with senior Jake Thibeault of Fitchburg, who suffered spine fractures and a mild brain hemorrhage during a hockey tournament with his club team. Jake was left paralyzed from the waist down when he collided with another player, then hit the boards. Jake is at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital; learn more about his determination and recovery.

Rest In Peace Senator Adlai ’48

We are sad to share that former US Senator Adlai Stevenson III of Illinois has passed away. After graduating from Milton Academy in 1948, he attended Harvard and went on to join
the Marine Corps. The great grandson of former Vice President Adlai Stevenson, he was elected senator in 1970 and reelected in 1974. Read more about Senator Stevenson’s life.

A Lasting Legacy: Griffin Family Scholarship

When legendary wrestling coach and history teacher Dick Griffin passed away last September, it prompted his son, Matt Griffin ’86, to reflect on the extraordinary opportunities that he and his late brother, Cub, enjoyed at Milton. As a tribute to Dick, Cub, and his late mother, Ellie, Milton’s pioneering and trusted director of health and counseling, Matt created the Griffin Family Memorial Scholarship. Dick and Ellie strived to create equal opportunity at Milton, and the fund will carry on their goal of helping students reach their full potential. Thank you to the Griffins for their countless contributions to Milton.

Congrats, Tapti!

Congratulations to recent Milton graduate Tapti Sen ’21 whose work of poetry, “To Love a Country,” was recently published in The Daily Star. Tapti’s poem was inspired by reconciling her third culture identity and how it has shaped her as a person. In the fall, Tapti will attend Amherst College and plans to study Law and Jurisprudence. Read Tapti’s poem.

Alumni Throwback

The Alumni and Development office recently heard from Robert G. White ’48, who generously supports financial aid at Milton. After reading about a wrestling student, Robert was reminded of a fond memory from his wrestling days at Milton when he defeated a famed opponent on a technicality, winning the match! Robert (front row, third from left) and the winning team are pictured above. Thank you for sharing, Robert. Have fun news or a memory to share? Write us at alumni@milton.edu.
