What’s Happening at Milton?

Campus Spotlight: Seminar Day

The Keyes Seminar Day, a lively day of speaking engagements for Upper School students, has been one of Milton’s most important traditions since 1977. It is named in honor of its founder, former faculty member Peter Keyes, a legendary promoter of student interest in political process as well as public and governmental affairs and service. In the Milton spirit of developing students’ confidence and competence to live by our motto, “Dare to be true,” Seminar Day brings to campus people who have made compelling choices. Luminaries in the fields of science, public policy, technology, media, and beyond shared insights and ideas from their lives and careers, including biotech pioneer, entrepreneur, and educator Dr. Robert Langer, whose keynote address was made possible thanks to the donors to the Sarah Bowles ’56 Speaker Fund.

Stang Story: Reintroducing Stang Stories

In 2020, Teddy Ellis ’22 started Stang Stories, a student-produced podcast seeking to explore and share the life stories of esteemed Milton alumni with the broader Milton community. This year, as her senior project, Diane Asiedu ’24 revived the podcast and handed it over to a team of underclassmen she trained to keep it going. The first in Diane’s series of eight alumni podcast interviews was with Head of School Alixe Callen ’88. Listen now on the Stang Stories website, or find the series on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

Campus Spotlight: Senior Projects

Each May, seniors go “on project,” taking a deep dive into a topic they’re passionate about and sharing their success at the culmination of their work. This year’s seniors chose an impressive array of creative and innovative projects, including the renovation of a school bus into an R.V. for a cross-country road trip; the study of Brutalism and creation of a live model of the Nesto gallery; internships at local schools, businesses, and theatres; and the hosting of a Transgender Excellence Expo, to name just a few. Senior projects are a great opportunity for students to bridge their academic pursuits with real-world experiences, and the Class of 2024 did just that. Thank you to all of the alumni who worked with seniors on their projects. Pictured are Diane Asiedu ’24, Dianne Cao ’24, and Serhii Malevych ’24 with members of the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. For their senior projects, the three made valuable contributions to the office with their unique projects and talents while learning about Milton’s fundraising and engagement work.

Former Principal Hugh Silbaugh Passes Away

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of former Upper School Principal, Hugh Silbaugh. Hugh worked at Milton from 2001-2005 and was a beloved member of the Milton community. He leaves behind his wife, Cor, and his sons, Harry and Jay. Hugh’s family maintained a journal about his illness on CaringBridge, where loved ones can leave messages of sympathy.

Alumni Invited to Virtual Gratwick Concert

We invite alumni to attend this year’s Gratwick Concert, a special event supported by an endowed fund established in memory of Katharine Perkins Gratwick ’24, on Friday, February 4, 2022 at 8:00 p.m. via Zoom. This year’s concert will feature musical pioneer, multi-Grammy-nominated cellist, Matt Haimovitz. Register for the event.

Alumni Form the Asian Inclusion Project

Milton alumni Katie Chow ’12 and Ashley Bae ’12 formed the Asian Inclusion Project as an opportunity to amplify Asian American voices and invite the community to the Asian American experience. They created the project in response to the hate crimes against the Asian and Asian American population, with hopes to bring people together with the power of food. “AIP is our way of celebrating and starting a productive conversation about the diverse ways to be Asian American,” Bae says. “We chose to tell stories of food because food has the power to unify.” Learn more about their collaboration.

Save the Date: Reunion Weekend

Calling all alumni class years ending in 2 and 7, save the date for Reunion! We’re looking forward to celebrating with you on Friday, June 17 and Saturday, June 18, 2022. More information is coming soon, with registration slated to open early this year. In the meantime, check out our Reunion site to connect with fellow classmates and learn how to volunteer for the event.

Upper School Transitions

Milton recently announced David Ball ’88 is stepping down as principal of the Upper School at the end of this academic year. Since 1999, David has been a thoughtful, strategic leader in the Milton community. He plans to continue teaching in the history and social sciences department and supporting the residential life program, among other initiatives. We are grateful for David’s long and meaningful tenure serving students.

Alumni Featured in Stang Stories

Stang Stories, a podcast created by Teddy Ellis ’22 and now supported through a student organization, shares stories of alumni journalists, scientists, professors, and more. “My favorite part about Stang Stories is the advice from amazing people. Hearing from alumni who have positively impacted the world about their paths after Milton has been both inspiring and helpful for current students who are trying to figure out life beyond high school,” stated Teddy. To learn more and to listen to the podcast, visit the Stang Stories website.
