What’s Happening at Milton?

Campus Spotlight: Seminar Day

The Keyes Seminar Day, a lively day of speaking engagements for Upper School students, has been one of Milton’s most important traditions since 1977. It is named in honor of its founder, former faculty member Peter Keyes, a legendary promoter of student interest in political process as well as public and governmental affairs and service. In the Milton spirit of developing students’ confidence and competence to live by our motto, “Dare to be true,” Seminar Day brings to campus people who have made compelling choices. Luminaries in the fields of science, public policy, technology, media, and beyond shared insights and ideas from their lives and careers, including biotech pioneer, entrepreneur, and educator Dr. Robert Langer, whose keynote address was made possible thanks to the donors to the Sarah Bowles ’56 Speaker Fund.

Stang Story: Reintroducing Stang Stories

In 2020, Teddy Ellis ’22 started Stang Stories, a student-produced podcast seeking to explore and share the life stories of esteemed Milton alumni with the broader Milton community. This year, as her senior project, Diane Asiedu ’24 revived the podcast and handed it over to a team of underclassmen she trained to keep it going. The first in Diane’s series of eight alumni podcast interviews was with Head of School Alixe Callen ’88. Listen now on the Stang Stories website, or find the series on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

Campus Spotlight: Senior Projects

Each May, seniors go “on project,” taking a deep dive into a topic they’re passionate about and sharing their success at the culmination of their work. This year’s seniors chose an impressive array of creative and innovative projects, including the renovation of a school bus into an R.V. for a cross-country road trip; the study of Brutalism and creation of a live model of the Nesto gallery; internships at local schools, businesses, and theatres; and the hosting of a Transgender Excellence Expo, to name just a few. Senior projects are a great opportunity for students to bridge their academic pursuits with real-world experiences, and the Class of 2024 did just that. Thank you to all of the alumni who worked with seniors on their projects. Pictured are Diane Asiedu ’24, Dianne Cao ’24, and Serhii Malevych ’24 with members of the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. For their senior projects, the three made valuable contributions to the office with their unique projects and talents while learning about Milton’s fundraising and engagement work.

Women’s History Month: A look back at Sarah Storer Goodwin, Girls’ School Principal, 1901-1928

Women’s History Month: A look back at Sarah Storer Goodwin, Girls’ School Principal, 1901-1928

Sarah Storer Goodwin transformed women’s education at Milton and laid the foundation for the dynamic curriculum of Milton Academy today. Before her arrival and the establishment of the Girls’ School at Milton, women’s education was an addendum to the primary focus of preparing the next generation of men. With only seven women enrolled in Milton at the start of her tenure, Goodwin quickly ignited her students’ love for learning and personal development, inspiring many more young women to enroll. The curriculum proved to be ahead of its time, providing students with the skills necessary to attend college and inspiring lifelong passions for math, science, and literature. Her love for theater was quickly absorbed and reradiated by her enthusiastic pupils, who began to perform outdoor plays behind their dorm. Former students recall her teachings with admiration: “Miss Goodwin understands… She can teach us to find our way in a world previously intended only for rude, scornful, or entirely indifferent males.” Goodwin’s legacy remains a testament to the revolutionary power of creating dynamic learning spaces where young women can empower themselves to think beyond the constraints of their societal moment.

DEIC Final Report

Milton Academy’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission (DEIC) has released a series of final recommendations, which have been endorsed by the school’s Board of Trustees. The recommendations represent more than a year’s worth of stakeholder engagement in response to demands that Milton change its approach to addressing injustice and inequity. Please visit the Diversity at Milton section of www.www.milton.edu to learn more and review the recommendations, which will guide the school’s future diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice efforts.

Celebrating Black Excellence

Milton kicked off Black History Month by welcoming a variety of speakers who participated in community events, including artist and educator Endia Beal, Women’s March organizer and diversity consultant Yavilah McCoy, and our own Osaremen Okolo ’13, who will share her Milton story and her path to working at the intersection of medicine, policy, and service as a Policy Advisor for Public Health and Equity in the White House. While Milton’s Department of Equity, Inclusion, and Justice will offer more than a dozen additional programs for the campus community throughout the month such as networking opportunities, affinity gatherings, film festivals, and dance performances, the department is working to amplify voices of color all year long via speaker programming, films, and conversation forums offered on campus. Be on the lookout for many of our community-wide engagement opportunities!
