Last week, Charlot Lucien visited Milton’s campus to lead French students through lessons and activities on Haitian culture and French Creole. Mr. Lucien is a well-known storyteller, poet and artist in Boston’s Haitian community and founded the Haitian Artists Assembly of Massachusetts. He has released four critically acclaimed storytelling CDs and his poems and commentaries have appeared in various publications. Mr. Lucien travels extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, France, Haiti and Guadeloupe as an educator and storyteller.
Following Mr. Lucien’s talk in Wigg Hall, Milton students enjoyed authentic Haitian cuisine prepared by Benji Solivan and the FLIK staff. Representatives from local non-profit organizations serving the Haitian community also visited campus to talk with students about their work.
The Francine L. Bustin Memorial Fund allows Milton’s modern languages department to host scholars, lecturers, artists and musicians. Mme. Bustin, for whom this fund is named, taught French at Milton from 1973 to 1984. Thanks to the generosity of the Lehner family and friends of Mme. Bustin, the Bustin Memorial Fund exists “to enrich and enhance the French language which Mme. Bustin taught with such eloquence.”
