Orientation Covers Important Ground

08-08_orientation
During the first few days at School and for several succeeding Saturdays, all new students participate in specially designed sessions.  As a package, these varied and interactive meetings begin communication about key issues.  The ideas are all important to students’ lives — life at Milton in some cases, and life beyond Milton in many.

Words of Wisdom
Saying Good-bye; Settling In

Anticipation and excitement are at a high pitch as the time comes to move in and start School.  As with most beginnings, and any venture into the unknown, a certain anxiety hums right along with the excitement.   For every child and every parent, the experience will be unique.  The many happy students and parents in the Milton community make it clear that embarking on the adventure of boarding school is well worth the effort.

Bridget Johnson, dean of students, and André Heard, associate dean, can share wisdom that springs from years of observation and participation. Click here to read a few highlights from their “how it works” ledger.

Which Performing Arts Faculty Member Summered in Lavendar?
(Click on the photo to see if you are correct.)

parentsassociationnews

Summer is winding down toward towards a beautiful autumn in New England as we prepare to send our children back to campus for another challenging year of learning and growth at Milton. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all new families and to returning families as well. All parents are members of the Milton Academy Parents' Association and we encourage your input and ideas.

What is the Milton Academy Parents’ Association?
At Milton, the Parents’ Association is dedicated to community building, fostering greater communication, offering opportunities for parents to meet one another, and supporting the efforts of faculty, staff and administration, and even to providing occasional sweets and goodies for the students!

The Milton Academy Parents’ Association serves parents of both day students and boarding students in Classes I-IV. Our board is made up of parents who have children in the various classes in the Upper School. We cordially invite you to become involved with the group whether you live nearby or on another continent.

In September you will receive an email that includes a schedule of our events for the year. Please check the schedule and attend as many events as you can. In addition, when you are on campus in September to register your student, stop by the Parents’ Association welcome table to learn more about what we do and our plans for the upcoming year. Volunteering to help is a wonderful way to stay connected to Milton and work with fellow parents.

Staying Informed
This newsletter, Centre Connection, is published five times each year to help keep parents informed about what’s happening on campus. In addition, the Milton Academy Web site is a vital tool, updated daily, and it includes previews and photos of special campus events in the arts, athletics, music, speech and other arenas. The Milton news and daily calendar entries are a great way to find out what is going on in your student’s day and weekend. The Parents’ Association page will keep you up-to-date on our calendar of events, volunteer opportunities and other news. Another informative and humorous source of information are the school newspapers, the Milton Paper and the Milton Measure. You will be receiving information about subscribing.

Whether you are a returning parent or new to Milton, we welcome you to be a part of life at Milton through the Parents’ Association. On behalf of the Parents' Association Board and our many committed volunteer leaders, we invite your thoughts and your questions and look forward to meeting as many of you as possible when school begins in September.

Dues
We strive to provide very cost effective programs, but we depend on parents dues to fund such activities. So, don’t forget to reply to the email by which you can have your dues added to your tuition statements. Or, you can send a check to our treasurer, Andrea Peabody, Canton Ave, Milton, MA 02186 ($60 for one child, $100 for more than one child in the school).

Parents' Weekend
Mark your calendars for Parents' Weekend. As many of you know, this is an opportunity to shadow your child in class and to see what a day in the life of a Milton student involves. At the end of this day, the Parents' Association will host a wine and cheese reception to give all a chance to unwind and chat with other parents.

Speaker Night
We are planning a special on-campus dinner with a speaker this winter. If you have any ideas for an engaging speaker or a interesting and timely topic about parenting, please pass such information along to Rita or Mark.

Meet Julie Badynee
08-08_faculty“Everyone has a learning style, and that’s what we’re trying to uncover,” says Julie Badynee, director of Milton’s Academic Skills Center.  “We want to pinpoint students’ learning styles and then find strategies to help them enhance what they do, setting them up for success.”

Julie came to Milton in 2005 with a background in special education; a master’s degree in learning disabilities; and professional experience in the corporate world and in education—both at independent and public schools.  “I worked in corporate training for years—I love teaching, coaching, guiding people into learning—but nothing beats working with students,” she says.  “Working with students is so much fun.”

Milton competes at the varsity level in football, field hockey, boys’ and girls’ soccer and boys’ and girls’ cross-country during the fall season. Pre-season practices for varsity teams will begin on Tuesday, September 2. Varsity team candidates should arrive at the Fitzgibbons Convocation Center at 10 a.m. Click here to download a schedule for the first week of varsity tryouts (pdf).

Tryouts for the 2nd and 3rd teams will begin after school on Monday, September 8. On the first day of school, we will communicate the locations of teams’ tryouts.

Milton also offers intramural athletics so that students have the opportunity to learn skills in sports where they may not yet be proficient or simply would like instruction in a lifelong sport. The fall intramural offerings this year are tennis, squash, yoga and strength & conditioning. Intramurals placement will be made based on seniority.

Fall Athletic Schedules
The Mustangs are geared up for another exciting fall season against some tough competition. Below are links to this year's varsity game schedules. We hope you can join us to support our teams. Click here to view information about all of Milton Academy’s fall teams.

Parent Giving 2007–2008
The 2007–2008 fiscal year has closed and Milton Academy’s parent giving program experienced a remarkable year.

We are pleased to report that the 2007–2008 Parents’ Fund had a record-breaking year, with all gifts to the Annual Fund totaling over $1,045,000.  This is a monumental achievement for Milton; thank you to the 317 families that supported the Annual Fund this year.

The Class I 2008 Parent gift also exceeded its goal by raising over $1 million from 80 percent of Class I families.  In addition, as a result of the generosity of parents of the Class of 2008, the Class I Endowed Fund for Faculty Support has been established.  We would like to thank each parent who contributed to Milton Academy this year.

It is also crucial to commend the 2007–2008 Parents’ Fund co-chairs, Jackie Bechek, Marty Cavanaugh and Ed Vilandrie, as well as the Class I 2008 Parent Gift co-chairs, Don and Gail McGovern and Charlie and Steve Wagner, for their admirable efforts and dedication this year.

Become a Parent Volunteer
Play an important role in your child’s Milton experience by becoming a Parent Giving Volunteer.

How can I get involved?
As we begin the 2008–2009 academic year, we are looking for dedicated parents to become more involved and connected within the Milton community.  Specifically, we are in need of volunteers to reach out to fellow parents in support of the Parents’ Annual Fund or the Class I Parent Gift.  Parent volunteers play a crucial role in the success of this fundraising effort by:

  • serving as a class representative
  • attending parent giving phonathons
  • making calls or sending emails to fellow Milton parents from home

You can be a volunteer from anywhere, so please let us know if you would like to be involved and we will work with you to find a role.

What is the Parents’ Annual Fund?
Tuition alone does not cover the entire cost of a Milton education. The Annual Fund, which includes support from parents, alumni and friends, provides 10 percent of Milton’s annual budget, and supports the wonderful faculty, as well as the superb academic and athletic programs that our children enjoy.

What is the Class I Parent Gift?
For over two decades, the parents of Class I students have joined together to contribute a special “thank you” gift to the School as an expression of appreciation to Milton for their children’s experience.  The Class I Parent Gift is a unique opportunity for families of Class I students to join together to leave their mark upon Milton Academy.
