Performing Arts: Theatre

Students may pursue their interest in dramatic performance in academic classes and in extra-curricular productions. Students in Classes IV, V, and VI are introduced to general concepts and experiences in required one-semester courses. Upper level courses develop specific performance skills and often result in presentations for school-wide audiences. Opportunities are also available for student-directed productions and independent studies.

In addition, Milton mounts at least eight productions a year. Three times a year, students in Classes I, II, and III may audition for a fully-mounted play, rehearsing every day over a period of six weeks. Or they may try out for a "1212 Play," a smaller-scale production in a more intimate space, with rehearsals from one to three afternoons a week. Class IV has a play of its own, as do students in Classes V and VI.

These younger students may also audition for some other productions of the department and work on the Technical Crew.

The scripts for all productions are chosen from the world repertory, from classic to contemporary, with a view to giving students an opportunity to work in a wide variety of genres. Recent selections have included Sophocles' Antigone, Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost, Moliere's Tartuffe, Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, Rostand's Cyrano, Lauro's A Piece of My Heart, and the musical Fiddler on the Roof.
