Since its beginning 25 years ago, Milton's Jazz Program, directed by Bob Sinicrope, has grown to include 45 students involved in the study and performance of jazz. April 1999 marks the second time that Down Beat magazine named Milton's Jazz Combo the best high school jazz group in the country. In the classroom, students take advantage of three levels of jazz improvisation courses, expanding their own capabilities as they learn about the genre. Performing throughout the year on and off campus, Milton's jazz combos have opened for such artists as James Taylor, Poncho Sanchez and Abdullah Ibrahim. Over the past several years, the most advanced group has twice toured in South Africa at Mr. Ibrahim's invitation. The group has performed in Florida and California, and during the summer of 1999, at many European jazz festivals as well. The jazz combo also played at the White House and has made four appearances at conventions of the International Association of Jazz Educators. The Jazz Music Program offers all students the opportunity to learn about and perform jazz from an international perspective.
